KUCHING: Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 will have its own mothership to beef up security control and surveillance in state waters, especially to curb intrusion by foreign fishing boats.

This was revealed by its Commander, ACP Salehuddin Mat Zaman after officiating at the ‘Moh Ngeteh Merdeka’ programme at Marine Police Region 5 base in Bintawa here yesterday.

He said the vessel, the largest in the state, was still under construction.

“Other assets such as speed boats are still being used during operations along the sea, rivers, and islands which are under the Militant Territory Water (MTW),” he said.

He said they had also received a vessel (PT2), from Bukit Aman Marine Police Office to carry out operations in Sarawak waters for one month.

“This vessel will be used to carry out operations in Beting Patinggi Ali in Miri.

“Besides PT2, we have also received an airboat from Semporna, Sabah. The boat is currently placed at Sibu Marine Police Base and it will be used by the personnel there to conduct patrols along the Rejang River,” he said.

Meanwhile, in another development, Salehuddin said two search and rescue (SAR) teams had been formed as part of their preparations for any eventuality of flooding in Kuching.

“Each SAR team comprises an officer and five personnel. These teams can also be deployed to other districts in Sarawak, if needed be, to provide assistance,” he said.
