KUCHING: The Critical Infrastructure Protection & Resilience Asia (CIPRA) 2018 marks its third year conference which is being held at The Waterfront Hotel here from 17 to 19 July.

Kuching is hosting CIPRA 2018 for the first time and the State government is delighted to be able to host this prestigious event.

Critical infrastructure protection is a major issue for every government in the world but it is a key priority here in Malaysia.

According to a research by the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), 24.5 million people out of 32 million in the country which is equivalent to 76.9 per cent have access to the Internet.

In 2017, Malaysia’s Internet penetration had risen to 85.7 per cent from 70 per cent in 2015 which showed that information and communications technology (ICT) has experienced rapid growth in the country.

“Malaysians are online shopaholics, according to Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), 7 per cent of online shoppers make a purchase almost daily, 26 per cent once a week, 54 per cent once a month and the remaining 13 per cent make a purchase once a year.

“Malaysia has the highest penetration of online shoppers with 67 per cent followed by Thailand with 57 per cent online shoppers and Singapore with 32 per cent,” said Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Infrastructure Development and Transportation, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing during the launching of the conference here yesterday.

He added that among the ASEAN countries, Singapore has the biggest retail e-commerce market with 24 per cent followed by Malaysia and Indonesia at 19 per cent.

Meanwhile, the National Cyber Security Policy (NCSP) in Malaysia is one of the most important measures taken to secure the cyberspace and forms the foundation of Malaysia e-sovereignty.

“The NCSP is a comprehensive initiative to tackle cyber threats, especially in the protection of the 10 critical sectors which are Defense and Security, Transportation, Banking and Finance, Health Services, Emergency Services, Energy, Water, Information and Communication, Government Services, Food and Agriculture,” Masing said.

Also present at the launching were Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Chief Executive Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia, Dato’ Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab.
