KAPIT: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing who is the Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation on Tuesday inspected the damaged road access to Sungai Tunoh area in Bukit Mabong District.

Masing accompanied by Pelagus state assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang   flew over to the site to inspect the damaged road that cut off communication link to five longhouses with approximately some 750 residents, one rural health clinic (KlinikDesa Sungai Tunoh), a primary school (SK Sungai Tunoh), Agriculture Store and Bukit Mabong District Office.

It was reported that two stretches of the abandoned logging road collapsed earlier this year. The wooden bridge across Sungai Sempurau was located about ten kilometres away from Tunoh. Another section of the road further away was also completely washed away resulting in vehicles being unable to drive through.

Accompanying Masing were Bukit Mabong District Officer Douglas Pungga; Assistant Director JKR Sarawak Gerald George; Kapit Divisional Engineer Anding Unchi, community leaders and a few other officials.

At the site Masing had a discussion with the assigned contractor Forhill Sdn Bhd who has the experience in building iron bridge and culvert and also engineers from the Public Works Departmant Kuching and Kapit Office as well as Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation to discuss how best to reinstall the road for the convenience of the Tunoh populace.

“This road is important to shorten the travelling distance to Tunoh about an hour. The Sarawak State Government is committed to building an iron bridge across Sungai Sempurau as well as repairing the collapsed culvert,” added Masing.
