KUCHING: The joyous spirit of Gawai and Hari Raya Aidilfitri prevailed at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Gawai Raya gathering held at its premises here, yesterday.
The event was officiated at by Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Also present were MBKS Mayor Dato James Chan Kay Sin and his deputy Haji Hilmy Haji Othman and MBKS Secretary, Vincent Ang.
“We are lucky to have the people of Kuching from all races and religions spending more time together in celebrating festive seasons in peace and harmony,” Dr Sim said in his speech.
He also congratulated MBKS for organising a gathering celebration for every festive season to bring the people of Kuching together.
Dr Sim urged the people of Kuching to come out of their
houses on 22 July to celebrate the historic day of Sarawak’s Independence.
“The late Tan Sri Haji Adenan Satem declared 22 July a public holiday so that we can celebrate our state’s Independence Day and not sleep on a historic day for the people of Sarawak,” he said.
During the gathering letter of appreciations were presented to five MBKS staffers for their service to the community and MBKS and the presentation of a souvenir to Datuk Dr Sim by Mayor Dato James Chan.
The guests were feted to food and drinks and stage performances by MBKS staffers.
