KUCHING: 40 Sarawak students yesterday received Medical Scholarships from the state government at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here.

The scholarships were handed over by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg to the medical students of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

“Congratulations to the students on being admitted to Unimas and on  receiving these scholarships.

“It is a historical moment for the state government to give away 40 scholarships in one go to the students.”

In view of the 1:800 doctor/patient ratio in the state, there was a need to have more doctors in the future, said Johari.

“Therefore, the state government has decided to give more scholarships to students in future to accommodate the needs of our state in the medical field.

“The total allocation for these scholarships for a five-year course is RM20 million, which is RM4 million for one year to 40 medical students. This shows the commitment of the state government to improve our performance and service delivery transformation,” he explained.

Director of Yayasan Sarawak, Haji Azmi Haji Bujang also said that the scholarships were among the strategic initiatives to meet the development needs of the state.

“Currently, out of the 3,282 doctors serving in the state, only 70 per cent are Sarawakians. The state government would like to improve this  percentage in the near future,

“Upon graduation and housemanship, these doctors are required to serve the state for a minimum period of ten years,” said Azmi.
