KUCHING: The Mini s t r y of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK) will look into the standardisation of beverage prices in coffee shops throughout the country.

Deputy Minister of KPDNKK, Chong Chieng Jen said that there were complaints from the public that the beverage prices were not reduced even though the Goods and Services Tax (GST) had been abolished.

“It was a fruitful discussion and the operators are very cooperative in voicing out their concerns.

“We are trying to come out with guidelines for this. KPDNKK will study the proposals,” said Chong during the press conference held after the dialogue session with the Sarawak Coffee Shop and Restaurant Operators Association at a local shopping complex here yesterday.

He hoped the dialogue session would tackle the profiteering problem caused by certain irresponsible coffee shop operators. Meanwhile, Chong also pointed that apart from the beverages prices, the coffee shop owners are also faced other problems including operating costs, minimum wage rates, copyright/royalty and supplies.

“At the national level, the ministry will also be engaging with all suppliers in an effort to prevent profiteering,” he said.

Also present were State KPDNKK director, Datuk Stanley Tan and chairman of the Sarawak Coffee Shop and Restaurant Operators Association, Hii Hung Yii. Also present at the dialogue session were representatives from coffee shop associations of Bintulu, Sri Aman, and Sibu.
