Miri City’s World Oceans Day to be celebrated next month

MIRI: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri is joining hands with Miri City Council, Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Chapter, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri, Society of English Writers Northern Zone (SOSWE) and Miri Toastmasters Club in celebrating Miri City’s World Oceans Day (WOD) 2017.

There are several programmes and activities which have been planned to commemorate the event.

The celebration will start with ‘Save the Ocean – Let’s Clean Up’ beach cleaning at Marina Bay on 1 July 2017 and followed by Miri’s World Oceans Day Symposium on 2 July which will be held in Pustaka’s Auditorium from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

MNS Selangor’s Wong Siew Lyn and Curtin Sarawak’s Assoc. Prof.Dr. Dominique Dodge-Wan are the invited speakers at the symposium which will be moderated by MNS Miri’sIqbal Abdollah.

They will be addressing two interesting topics – ‘Towards Plastic-Free Seas’ and ‘Save Our Miri Beach’ respectively.

The symposium is open to the public and admission is free.

On 8 July, secondary school students are invited to participate in WOD 2017: Speak Up! World Ocean Day Public Speaking Competition to be held in the library’s Auditorium at 1:00pm.

The organizers will also hold a WOD 2017: Essay Writing Competition which will be held on 15 July.

There are two categories – Category A (Form 1 – Form 3) and Category B (Form 4 – Form 5). It will be held in Pustaka’s AV Room, commencing at 1.00pm.

There will also be WOD 2017: Arts & Crafts Competition – Let’s Upcycle! which is opened to two categories – Category A (above 17 years old) and Category B (age 17 and below).

The competition involves using recyclable materials picked up from beaches in Miri and transforming them into innovative, useful product or creative artwork.

This competition commences from 12 June and the closing date for submission is 20 July 2017.

The entries will be displayed in an exhibition to be held in Pustaka’s Foyer starting from 24 July.

The competitions are based on the WOD 2017 theme ‘Our Oceans, Our Future’ and attractive prizes await the winners.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held on 29 July 2017 at MRC Miri Chapter’s Periwinkle Hall.

World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future.

Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans.

The international day as designated by United Nations is on 8th June, however due to the fasting month and the programs are for public, the organizers moved the celebration to July.
