KUCHING: Morris Hii Zen Wei from D-30 Miri Muaythai club emerged as the champion for Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Muaythai Challenge.

Morris beat Abang Mohd Uquil Abg Mustapha from Sarawak Warmonger club after almost 10 minutes bout in the ring held at Kuching Waterfront, here, on Saturday.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government have agreed to expand the Sports Village in Petra Jaya in an effort to improve the standard of the state’s athletes.

He said the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Cultural, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah have requested the state government to expand the Sports Village in Petra Jaya and upgrade it with the necessary sporting equipment.

“I have agreed with Karim’s request to expand the Sports Village in Petra Jaya.

“It will be built next to the State Stadium and will be equipped with the necessary training facilities for Sarawak athletes to train for local and international competitions,” said Johari.

The Chief Minister hoped that the event such as the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Muaythai Cup Challenge will continue to be promoted in the state, as well as other sporting programmes to provide a better understanding for the sports enthusiasts.

He also congratulated Sarawak Muaythai Association for their achievement in the recent Sukma in Perak.

“Although the association was formed in about five years, they have sent their athletes to compete in the Sukma and won two gold medals for Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Amateur Muaythai Championship were also held earlier to look for new local talents for the coming Sukma 2020 in Johor.

The event was organised by the Sarawak Muaythai Association, the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), State Sports Council, Saraurusharta Sdn Bhd (SEDC) and others agencies and NGOs.

Also present were DBKU Mayor Datik Abang Wahap Abang Julai, Sarawak Muaythai Association president Jumaat Hakim and other distinguished guests.
