KUCHING: The state’s branch of the Malaysian Marine Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is partaking in a new project to have its own Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV).

Sarawak MMEA Director, First Admiral Ismaili Bujang Pit said that the proposed project Is to build three OPVs with each for Sarawak, Sabah and West Malaysia respectively.

“We have received funds to undertake the project and if all goes well, these vessels would be completed within two to three years’ time,” he said.

Ismaili announced this in a press conference held after the official launching of the latest New Generation Patrol Craft (NGPC) KM Sri Aman held at Sarawak MMEA Headquarters, yesterday. The total cost of the three vessels is estimated to be over RM700 million with each vessel costing about RM200 million.

He further disclosed that the OPV will be bigger in size with the length of 70 metres long. “The vessel will be the flagship vessel for all of the MMEA across the country.

It is part of our government’s integrity image that symbolises MMEA’s role as the Malaysian coast guard,” said Ismaili.
