KUCHING: One of the ways to keep the state moving forward is by using hydrogen power to move everything that needs power, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg. “Some people may say why don’t the state government use conventional ways? If we do not try the new power, we will always be left behind,” he said.

He added that by using hydrogen power in moving things that need energy, the state could get clean environment and energy power. “We have four big dams, namely Batang Ai, Baleh, Murum and Bakun, which provide an abundance of water.

Through the process of electrolysis, we will try to separate the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Hydrogen will then be in the form of gas as a source of hydropower,” explained Abang Johari during the opening ceremony of the 11th International Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS ) STEM Engineering Conference (EnCon) at Riverside Majestic Hotel here yesterday.

He added, “We need people such as the participants of the conference who are experts in these fields to provide the input for the state to form a policy that benefits the government and people.”

Abang Johari expected that the conference will be a platform for a sharing session on the field of environment and processes which can provide innovation and produce new products that can be used in the market. Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said that more than 80 technical papers on the latest technologies will be presented during the two-day conference which ends today.

“At the same time, the conference also features an International Science and Engineering Expo (i-STEEX) showcasing the latest information and research projects by students from secondary schools and higher learning institutions as well as the industries,” he added. In addition, the exchange of Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also held during the opening ceremony between UNIMAS’ Faculty of Engineering and various collaborators.

The faculty secured a total of 12 agreements; five Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) and seven Memoranda of Understandings (MoU). The MoA collaborators comprised Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM), CMS Cement Industries Sdn Bhd, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), University of Limoges, France, and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Meanwhile, the MoUs were exchanged between the faculty and Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Malaysia (JMG), Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, Samalaju Downstream Sdn Bhd, HT Energy (S) Sdn Bhd, Malaysian Research & Innovation Society (MyRIS), Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudi l , Niger i a (KUST), and University of Kracheh, Cambodia (UKC).
