KUCHING: The State Social Development Council (MPS) will carry out six research and development programmes this year, disclosed Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah yesterday.

“After identifying the social issues, we would like to carry out research so that whatever we do, whatever we come up with, be it policies, intervention, prevention or creating awareness programmes, they should be based on evidence,” she told a press conference after a briefing on MPS Strategic Plan at Bangunan Baitulmakmur (Masja) at Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Fatimah said the biggest research to be carried out is on the State Social Wellbeing Index which will look into all the issues under social wellbeing. “We already have a MoU with Universiti Malaya, and God willing, they will start to carry out the research study on Sarawak’s social wellbeing beginning from January to December this year. “It is a very massive exercise because it will cover social wellbeing at the state level, divisional level and district level,” she said.

“From there, we will be able to see the strong areas and the weak areas so that we can further plan it at state level, divisional level and district level, and focus on areas of social development and community wellbeing,” she explained. She said the other researches or studies to be carried out are on evaluation of training, effectiveness of courses provided by Wisma Wanita Training Centre, participation and involvement of women in terms of leadership, engagement of the community, especially in NGOs in term of development. Other areas include teenage pregnancies and contributing factors, drug abuse and usage among secondary students in Sarawak and research on factors contributing to the cause and existence of stateless children.

“We want to carry out a comprehensive study on the factors leading to the existence of stateless children in Sarawak. Once we know the factors, we want to tackle the issues of children without personal documents,” she said.

“These six researches that we are going to do will be carried out within a one year period. Some will take less than one year, some will take three months and some may take 12 months,” Fatimah said. Fatimah also disclosed a number of programmes to be carried out this year, including Wacana Bestari, Dialogue Input Komuniti, Jeyawara OSTPC and Social Intervention Programme (KAPS).
