KUCHING : The General Commanding Officer of the First Infantry Division, Major General Datuk Steven Mundaw is making a mini museum at his headquarters here in Muara Tuang Camp. He salvaged the hundreds of old pictures, paper cuttings and artifacts stashed in files, scrape books and in the storerooms, and displayed them in his mini museum for public viewing.

Mundaw’s effort is ongoing with hundreds more kept in scrape books that are in danger of rotting through improper storage. Malaysians in general do not have the flair of keeping records and his effort is therefore something that is outstanding and extraordinary.

Besides saving the valuable artifacts from total destruction, he is also trying to update the more immediate historical records before they are forgotten and lost forever.

Among the records was the involvement of the security forces, particularly units under the command of the First Infantry Division in Sarawak and Sabah, in the fight against the communist threats.

Mundaw said he was also trying to erect historical monuments at the exact locations of events/incidents on the ground so that they would always be remembered by the present and future generations.

On Monday, Lt Col Robert Rizal bin Abdullah PGB (rtd), who had played a big role in combating the communist threat in Sarawak in the 1970s, handed over three paintings of his three battles with the communist terrorists in Kuching and Serian districts.

The handing over ceremony was witnessed by the President of Persatuan Veterans Tentera Kor Renjer (PVTKR), Lt Col Mohd Melintang Abdullah (rtd) and former Director of Sarawak’s Jabatan Hal Ehwal Veterans (JHEV), Lt Col Monday Juhid (rtd).
