Navy event gets overwhelming response

KUCHING: Residents of the city, trainees from National Service Training Centre (PLKN), kindergarteners as well as veterans of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) thronged Navy’s Open Day here yesterday.

The event took place at Gagah Samudera Training Ship (KLGS) which had docked at the Pending Port here. 

The Commanding Officer of TLDM, Commander Mahamad Nazir Darus revealed that the visit from the public has been very encouraging.

“We could see the amount of overwhelming crowds coming for the open day as early as 9am,” he exclaimed.

Nazir added that Kuching was the second last stop for the vessel before proceeding to Bintulu Port tomorrow.

“We will conduct another open day in Bintulu when we arrive there on Saturday,” he said.

He explained that the open day aimed to expose and promote the maritime industry to the public.

“We want to give experience and expose them on how we work and how our is life on board. We also want to communicate and interact with the public during the open day,” he said.

Nazir disclosed that KLGS is the latest fleet and first vessel for training operation which started since March 2017.

“We have trained almost 500 officers and personnel during our voyages to various places including overseas and this is the first task to East Malaysia after our stops at Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Sulu sea.

“For now, the waters off Sabah are safe and our main task is to patrol while conducting trainings,” he said.
