KUCHING: One of the two rabies samples received from the Veterinary Research Institute (VRI) in Ipoh yesterday was found positive. The sample was taken from Kampung Sejijak in Batu Kawa and hence, areas within 10km radius from the location were now declared as rabies-infected areas. The Department of Sarawak Veterinary Service (JPVS) has urged members of the public to isolate their pets (vaccinated or not) from strays to prevent them from getting the virus.

If their pets mingled with the strays, the owners were advised to monitor their pet’s behaviours such as over-drooling, anxiousness and especially towards moving objects, water and light. According to the State Health Department, new statistics have shown that a total of 38 individuals have received anti-rabies vaccines due to animal bites.

The most number recorded is in Kuching which stands at 16 persons followed by Serian with 15 people. JPVS has also published a new statistic on the types of animal that bit their victims and most of them were pet owners. This includes 21 dogs, nine cats and one rabbit that totals up to 31 pets. On the other hand, seven stray animals have been recorded to have bitten their victims.
