KUCHING: The next CAT intake at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence on 10 July 2017, while the next ACCA intake at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence on 19 July 2017.

Kolej Sunway Kuching’s Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) programmes combine to offer students the fastest and most economical route to becoming a professional accountant.

This assertion was made by Kolej Sunway Kuching CEO Joseph Lim in a press statement released yesterday.

“SPM school leavers who pursue ACCA via our CAT route can graduate as ACCA Affiliates within three to four years – that is, when they are 21 or 22 years of age.

“And they can complete the entire programme at Kolej Sunway Kuching for under RM45,000”, said Lim.

According to Lim, students sometimes wrongly perceive professional accountancy qualifications like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) as being difficult to pass.

“I am not saying that these UK-based exams are easy. But with the guidance and support provided by our outstanding team of lecturers, students of Kolej Sunway Kuching have an excellent chance of passing their exams”, he said.

Lim added that, over the years, Kolej Sunway Kuching has consistently produced outstanding pass rates in CAT and ACCA examinations that surpass the world and Malaysian pass rates.

To date, the college has nurtured a total of 386 ACCA Affiliates, 96 Oxford Brookes University (OBU) graduates, 819 CAT Finalists, as well as 8 CAT World Prize Winners and 22 ACCA and CAT Malaysian Prize Winners.

“Kolej Sunway Kuching is the first and only tuition provider in East Malaysia to be awarded the Platinum Approved Learning Partner status by ACCA.

“Since achieving this award in 2010, we have been able to successfully sustain it for the pastseven years over 14 consecutive examination sittings”, said Lim.

Platinum’ is the highest and most prestigious level of approval granted by ACCA to learning providers, bestowed only to those tuition providers that have met stringent performance indicators such as pass rates which surpass those of the world, effective management and relevant support services.

“As a consequence of our achievements, we are touted as the leading tuition provider for professional accountancy courses in the region, and our graduates have become the No.1 choice of employers”, he said.

Lim declared thathis college’s greatest accomplishment has been its ability to consistently produce high caliber graduates.

“It makes me proud that KolejSunway Kuching graduates have become much sought after, having acquired a reputation for being high achievers.

“This is because they have endured the grinding in campus that enables them to adapt and face the challenges in their work environment”, Lim said.

According to Lim, students of Sunway receive an education that focuses on both academic as well as practical learning, through activities like the internship and job placement programmes, the Oxford Brookes University (OBU) BSc (Hons) Degree in Applied Accounting, seminars, workshops, site visits, case study competitions and corporate social responsibility projects.

“These pursuits make Kolej Sunway Kuching graduates technically sound, and enables them to acquire a mix of interpersonal and organizational skills to complement the needs of today’s modern globalised world”, he said.

CAT is a nine paper, technician level qualification designed by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to accountancy. The course can be completed within 12 to 18 months of full-time study and is recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as equivalent to a diploma.

Upon completing CAT, students receive exemption from the three (3) papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA. This means the students only have to complete a further 11 papers to graduate as an ACCA Affiliate.

To be eligible to enroll for CAT at Sunway Kuching, students must obtain a minimum of 5 credits in SPM, including in English and Mathematics.

ACCA is an internationally recognized professional accountancy qualification from the United Kingdom that is equivalent to a Masters Degree in Accountancy.

Armed with this qualification and three years of relevant working experience, graduates will be recognized by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and will be able to practice as qualified chartered accountants.

Unlike foreign accounting degree holders (e.g. from countries like the UK, US, Australia or New Zealand), ACCA graduates do not need to sit for professional exams to qualify for MIA recognition as ACCA is one of the 10 overseas accounting bodies that is fully accredited by the MIA.

To register for the ACCA course at Kolej Sunway Kuching, the student must have completed and passed one of the following:

• STPM (2 credits in STPM plus 5 credits in SPM, including in English and Mathematics);

• The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification; or

• A diploma or degree from an MQA (Malaysian Qualifications Agency) accredited university or institution.

Kolej Sunway Kuching will be hosting an Open Day and an Application Day on the 1 and 2 July 2017 and 8 and 9of July 2017 respectively.

Students and parents who want to learn more about CAT and ACCA are strongly urged to attend either event.
