KUCHING: A total of 160 participants including members of State Legislative Assembly (ADUN), political secretaries as well as heads of government agencies attended the Ninth Parliamentarian Seminar at a hotel here, yesterday.

The one-day seminar was organised by the State Government, the ADUN and Leadership Institute of Sarawak Civil Service.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg who officiated at the closing ceremony, the seminar served as a more focused approach to ensure that all the ADUNs are performing up to the mark.

Citing the importance for ADUNs to fully grasp the concept of ‘Digital Economy’, he hoped that all the ADUNs were well conversant with the concept of Digital Economy and suggested that they need to start doing their own research.

“Sarawak will embark this entirely new dimension of development and growth by creating more new jobs for young people in urban and rural areas, transforming the way we live and do business.

“Therefore, it would be a pity if you cannot debate this subject intelligently in the august house. You also need this knowledge to engage with your constituents in case you are asked to explain what Digital Economy is all about,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the seminar also covered the ADUN Scorecard which is a monitoring tool to track effectiveness of state leaders in a more organised manner; this was previously introduced by the late former Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Earlier this year, late Adenan mentioned that he might make assessments based on a scoreboard or by complaints received through ‘words of mouth’ or through social media on their poor performance.

“The ADUN Scorecard is one sure way to measure performance on a regular basis,” he added.

Apart from that, Johari also reminded the ADUNs about utilising the funds prudently and effectively.

“I want you to use wisely the RM5 million allocation for the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) and ensure that all projects and programmes implemented under the RTP to be completed in a timely and cost effective manner,” he said.

Among the speakers at the seminar were DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, Director of Digital Innovation and Translation at Swinburne University of Technology Prof. Jugdutt Singh and State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
