KUCHING: The government has no immediate plan to construct a proper road to Mulu.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Lee Khim Shin explained this to Piasau Assemblyman, Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who wanted to know on any plans to construct a proper road from Miri to Mulu to access this popular tourist site.

“Mulu is currently accessible by air via MasWing twice daily from Miri and once daily from Kuching. For those who are more adventurous, they can take the two-hour four wheel drive from Miri through Long Bedian to Long Terawan. From there, it takes another two hours by boat ride to reach Mulu,” he said at the State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

According to Lee, his ministry is working closely with Divisional Tourism Task Group under Resident’s Office, and Miri City Council, Sarawak Tourism Board and Sarawak Tourism Federation to promote Miri.

“Miri is the gateway to the Northern Region and the entry point to the one and only Sarawak UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mulu National Park. With strong iconic tourism product, Miri will naturally be the attraction for tourists. Promotional activities carried out by my ministry include tactical campaign to put Miri as one of the preferred destinations to visit.

“The component of the tactical campaign is by positioning Miri and Mulu National Park as a twin destination. The campaign was launched last June together with MasWings and a travel agent based in Miri (Tropical Adventure Tours Sdn Bhd). This campaign is still active and to be re-launched with better fare for next year if there is a demand,” he said.

He said promotions through filming and movie whereby Miri has been chosen as a filming venue for a Chinese ‘Blue Tears’ movie wou;ld help highlight the unique attractions around Miri and the movie shooting was launched at the end of last year.

Through this movie, he said Miri will be seen by millions of audience in China and other parts of the world which will promote Miri as a tourist destination.

He explained that a short video clip on Food Trail of Miri had also been shot and would be shown on local TV channels to target domestic and Brunei markets and participation in the Brunei Travel Fair, Bandar Seri Begawan in September 2016 under the Sarawak – Brunei joint Tourism Working Group had also given much help.

Among other promotional activities carried out by Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said Lee are promotion through domestic travel fair in Kuala Lumpur (MATTA Fairs – March and September 2016), MATTA Fair in Kuching (September 2016) and Domestic Fair in Johore Bahru (April to May 2016) and Penang (September 2016), Malaysia Megasales (July – August in Miri) by Tourism Malaysia.
