MIRI  City Council (MCC) has no plans to shut down and relocate the existing Sibuti sanitary landfill.

In revealing this to the State Legislative Assembly yesterday, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the location was convenient for serving Miri, Subis as well as Marudi.

“The landfill is three kilometres away from the nearest kampung,” he said.

The facility is equipped with  a new RM23 million leachate treatment plant which became operational recently. The plant has the capacity to serve Miri, Subis and Marudi for the next 35 years.

“As for the Lambir Transfer station, MCC has applied for an allocation of RM17 million this year  from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government to construct a new transfer station at KM11 , Miri-Bintulu Road.

“MCC is still waiting for the approval of the funding,” Sim disclosed.

On the closure of the dump site at Entulang in Sri Aman Division, Sim explained that the move could only  be implemented  after the completion of the new sanitary landfill site.

He added that the Sri Aman District Council had to wait for the recommendations of the State Integrated Solid Waste Management Study before planning and bidding for the necessary budget to construct the new landfill.

On the progress of construction work, he said the fire and rescue station  in Samalaju was 98 per cent completed while the station in Selangau  was 77 per cent, Daro 72 per cent, Batu Niah  62 per cent and Sibu Jaya  27 per cent.
