KUCHING: Sarawak Spor t s Corporation (SSC) is working closely with the Modernisation Unit of Sarawak State Administration (UPPN) and Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) for the use of an Integrated Games Management System (IGMS) for the coming Sukan Sarawak 2017 (SukSar), here, from Dec 14 to 17. This was announced by SSC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ong Kong Swee on Sunday after attending a briefing-cum-coordination meeting at UPPN’s office located at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya.

According to him, the online management system will facilitate the smooth running of SukSar which will be participated by 828 athletes from throughout the divisions in Sarawak who will be accompanied by another few hundred of their coaches as well as contingents’ officials.

“All of the participating zones have more or less finalised their list of athletes who are competing in the various events, including the accompanying contingents’ officials and related members,” said Dr Ong “Even though the final date for the submission of athletes is November 15, we have already received the lists from the respective contingents which is a good sign of their readiness to compete in SukSar,” he added.

He said the use of IGMS will facilitate SSC’s efforts to record the background of the participating athletes comprising 220 from the Central Zone consisting of those selected from Sibu, Kapit and Mukah while 200 are those representing the Northern Zone comprising of Miri, Bintulu and Limbang and another 173 representing the Western Zone comprising of Sarikei, Betong and Sri Aman.

“While most of the contingents have completed their own final selection of athletes, it is also important for us to monitor the standards of achievements of those selected in order to maintain the high level of performance that we are aiming at,” said Dr Ong who expressed satisfaction on the level of preparation among the contingents.

Through the implementation of the IGMS, the games schedule and results of the 14 different sports for the normal athletes and para athletes will be recorded online in which the general public especially the athletes themselves can monitor the progress of the SukSar competitions.

Among the sports to be competed in SukSar are weightlifting, badminton, cycling, handball, lawn bowls, judo, karate, archery, Muaythai, athletics, rugby, swimming and women sepaktakraw. The four sports for the para athletes are swimming, athletics, powerlifting and archery.
