KUCHING: Since its inception last September, UBER had made its mark in Kuching as one of the most important cities in Malaysia.

With less than two years of its establishment, UBER had recorded the most number of trips by a driver-partner with 5,600 trips.

To complement this, a rider in Kuching has also reached his or her 1000th ride with UBER.

In a casual meet and greet with the local media at the James Brooke Bistro here yesterday, Head of Communications of UBER Southeast Asia, Leigh Wong said that currently there were more than 10,000 registered UBER drivers.

“Since we have a lot of drivers here in Kuching, we can cater enough demand from Kuchingites especially during peak hours.

“And because of this, we can decrease the waiting time for riders, which we can safely say that riders need not wait for seven minutes for their ride. Plus we can also decrease the price of our fares.

“Additionally, 80 of our riders now only wait under 10 minutes for their ride. We are also proud to say that 60 per cent of our drivers in Kuching drive less than 10 hours per day.

“This shows that our drivers would often take breaks in between, so that they could also enjoy their time or as some would say it, being a part-time UBER driver,” added Leigh.

He also disclosed that the top five locations that were frequently driven to are Vivacity Megamall, Kuching International Airport, The Spring Shopping Mall, Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall and Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak campus).

“We have also identified the most popular time for riders to use UBER in Kuching which are on Fridays and Saturdays, both in the afternoon and evening.

“Last month, riders from 176 cities in 49 countries had used UBER in Kuching. However, since the official launching in Kuching, riders from 291 cities in 71 countries had used UBER to move around here.

“We are also proud to say that 15 per cent of our drivers here in Kuching are female. This greatly reflects the safety measures that UBER takes for both riders and drivers,” said Leigh.

As the year comes to an end, Leigh shared a few UBER facts in Kuching. Statistically, many Kuchingites would use UBER at 1.00pm and the most UBERS requested in a single day was on 23 July. He added that 4 January was UBER’s least popular day.
