BINTULU: More than 200 students and 25 teachers from all schools in Bintulu Division attended a basic and advance level hockey coaching clinic held here at SK Ashakirin and SMK Bintulu from May 5-7.

Organised by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) together with the Hockey Association of Sarawak (HAS), the clinic was conducted by Sarawak coach C. Sivasubramaniam who taught the basics of the game as well as new system of play.

From the clinic, 18 girls who showed potentials and three teachers from SMK Kidurong, SMK Sebauh and SMK Bintulu were handpicked to undergo a more advance level coaching camp at the Padungan Hockey Stadium in Kuching from June 5-10.

Sivasubramaniam, who will be leaving the state soon, said the girls will receive better knowledge in the game and when they go back to their schools they will introduce what they have been taught to students of their schools.

“There are raw talents which I saw in the mostly under 15 girls in Bintulu which would have gone to waste if they are not brought up properly.

“The teachers have been doing a good job but because of the lack of facilities and lack of emphasis on basic coaching, it is better to bring them to a further coaching camp to impart the knowledge of what is high level hockey,” said Sivasubramaniam.

The coach, who was assisted by Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and HAS coaches Sri Sakrunathan, C. Sunil Roy, Netty Elvis and Pamela Tia, added that emphasis should be placed on teaching the students the basics of the game which is found lacking in them.

He said because of the lack of facilities, the teachers only coached them the techniques but they are lacking in that important aspect of the game.

In any coaching, they must put emphasis on the basics of the game with 45 minutes devoted to brushing up the basics and the rest on techniques.

In giving thanks to the SSC Chief Executive Officer Dr Ong Kong Swee for organising the coaching clinic, Sivasubramaniam said clinic was held for the first time here to help raise the standard of hockey and ensure there is a good supply of talents for the state.
