UCHING: Over 300 delegates representing mosques statewide were present at the opening of the ‘Muktamar Masjid-Masjid Negeri Sarawak 2017’ (Congress of Sarawak Mosques 2017) by the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud at Riverside Majestic Hotel, here yesterday.

In his opening speech Taib urged the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to come out with a solution to bridge generation gap in order to avoid conflict between the old and new generations.

In saying this, the Head of State pointed out that old and young generations must work together and collaborate to bridge the generation gap in the new era of economic development without losing their identity and culture, especially among Muslims.

He said that is why a committee must be lead by the the Islamic Council because the it can provide foundation basis based on Islamic values for guidance.

“Therefore, we must find a way to get these two generations to work together in line with the change of time, so that the younger generation will respect the positive values practised and preserved by the old generation.

“I want the State Islamic Council to find a way to overcome this issue through a more rational discussion with a clear understanding on the matter, so that the old and new generations can work together to educate the younger ones,” said Taib in his speech when officiating at the conference.

He added there must be a way for the old culture to get support from the new generations and continue to preserve it for the future generations.

Taib also noted that the new generations must know that the world is ever changing and must not be left behind.

“That is why we must study our own community and the changes that are going to take place in our society, and that we must adjust ourselves accordingly to the situation.

“We must expect what are coming for the new generations so that we are prepared and would not result in conflicts between the two generations.
