Over 3,000 sign up for Sibu Marathon 2017

SIBU: More than 3,000 participants have signed up for the Sibu Marathon to be held this Saturday (16 Sept) at the Sibu City Square Phase 1.

The prestigious event held for the first time here is part of Visit Sibu Year (TMS) 2017 activities and offered a total prize money of RM75,160.

The event organising chairman, Counsillor Wong Hie Ping said that besides local participants, there were also foreign participants.

“The foreign participants are from Kenya, Australia, Hong Kong, Brunei, China and Peninsula Malaysia who will compete in 12 categories.

“The start line and finish line are in front of Wisma Sanyan. The prize presentation ceremony will be held at 7.30am at Chuan Corridor,” he said at a press conference at the Rejang meeting room, 24th Floor, Wisma Sanyan, Sibu yesterday afternoon.

He said the flagging-off for the full marathon will be at 12.01am (16 September), followed by half marathon at 4am, 10km at 5.30am while the 5 km is at 6am.

“Starting at 10.30pm on 15 September until 10am on 16 September, all roads used for the marathon will be closed to traffic.

“A total of 200 volunteers from the police, RELA, Malaysian Red Crescent, Swan City Cycling Club, local colleges and university will help to ensure that the marathon runs smoothly,” he said.

Wong also urged the participants who have not taken their T-shirt for the Sibu Marathon to take them at the lobby of  RH Hotel from today until 6 pm on Friday.

“The prize for the full marathon category is RM4,000 (champion), RM3,000 (second place), RM2,000 (third place), RM1,000 (fourth place), RM800 (fifth place), RM400 (sixth place) while RM300, RM200 and RM100 for the seventh, eighth and ninth position, respectively.

“For the half marathon, the champion will receive RM1,500, RM1,000 (second place), RM800 (third place), RM500 (fourth place), RM350 (fifth place), RM250 (sixth place) followed by RM200, RM150 and RM100 for the seventh, eighth and ninth positions, respectively,” he said.

Meanwhile, the champion for the 10km run will bring home RM500, RM350 (second place), RM250 (third place), RM150 (fourth place) and RM100 (fifth place), while for the 5km run the champion will get RM200, RM150 (second place), RM100 (third place) and RM100 for the fourth place winner.

Also present during the press conference were Deputy Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council, Rogayah Jemain.
