Over 500 in ‘Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa’programme

KAPIT: More than 500 people from various government departments and agencies, students, local clubs and associations, and local community leaders took part in the divisional level ‘Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa’ programme held at the compound of the Civic Centre here on Saturday morning.

The ‘Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa’ programme was held simultaneously state wide with the state level celebration to be held in Mukah division.
Officiating at the function was Bukit Goram Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

In his speech Jamit called on the people to further strengthen the existing racial harmony and unity.

“The existing harmony and unity must be our fundamental element in our daily life. The prevailing friendship, co-operation and harmonious neighbourliness must be practiced to the fullest and we must nurture among the younger generation of the importance of racial harmony and unity in our diversified society,” said Jamit.

He pointed out that the strength of Kapit comes from its friendly people, harmonious relations, unity and co-operation despite the people’s different ethnic, social and religious practices.

“We must all co-operate with one another. Kapit is the perfect example of 1Malysia and I want this to be our way of life,” he said.

He also disclosed that this year’s state-level Merdeka Day celebration is centred in Mukah with the theme ‘Negraku Sehati Sejiwa’ which calls for everyone to be united in the face of various challenges brought about by the advancement in modern technology.

Organising chairman, Joseph Belayong Punan who is also Kapit Resident in his speech said the Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebration were not just merely public holidays but is when citizens of the country showed their commitment, dedication and patriotism for the nation.

Meanwhile, various activities were held during the programme including mass aerobic exercise, Merdeka Fun Walk around Kapit Town, children colouring contest, presentation of the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ to the state, federal and community leaders, Pesta Kapit which showcasing entrepreneurship, gotong royong at Community Based Rehabitation Centre, High tea and lucky draws.

Present were Deputy Resident, Galong Luang, Walikota of Kapit District Council, Councillor Philimon Nuing, tcouncil secretary, Jabang Juntan, Calvin Ligong representing Bukit Mabong District Officer, Wan Shukri representing Kapit District Officer, Temenggong Wilfred Billy Panyau, heads of the various government departments and agencies and community leaders.
