KUCHING: A motorcycle was destroyed in a fire, believed to have been caused by an act of arson, at Wisma Persekutuan Flats at Jalan Permai in Sarikei around 11.20pm last Sunday.

The motorcycle belongs to an officer of Sarikei Civil Defence Force (APM), Lt (PA) Mackinly Jores.

According to a spokesman of State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), nine firefighters in a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) machinery and an EMRS vehicle from Sarikei fire station were dispatched to the scene after being notified that the motorcycle, a Honda Wave, had caught fire at 11.25pm.

The firefighters arrived at the scene three minutes later and took about 5 minutes to put out the fire.

It was understood that members of the public had tried to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher, but failed.

Another motorcycle parked next to Mackinly’s motorcycle was also damaged in the incident.

Meanwhile, according to Bernama, Mackinly who was in Kuching when contacted said he was informed of the arson by a fellow resident.

The resident had heard an explosion and found the motorcycle ablaze, he said.

“In July, someone detached a carburetor hose and stole all the fuel from my motorcycle. I believe it was the work of the same person, but I do not know the motive,” said Mackinly, adding that he would lodge a police report upon his return from Kuching.
