KUCHING: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) president, Cobbold John Lusoi  has said he may fight the president of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing for the  Bintulu parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).

SPDP Youth Chief, Robert Ayu commented yesterday anyone was free to stand against any candidate(s) in any seat of their choice  in a  democratic country like Malaysia.

“If Cobbold thinks he can serve the people better and can bring more development to the people of Bintulu, he may stand against our president,” Ayu said when asked about Cobbold’s intention to take on the incumbent Tiong in Bintulu.

“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. The President’s records, since becoming MP in Bintulu in 1999, speak for itself. In any event, we take all opposition candidates seriously regardless of their reasons to fight our candidates.

“To make the record straight, our president never said he supported Hudud. In any event, the Barisan Nasional through Prime Minister,  Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak already said that based on consensus, he would not table the bill. Thus, it’s not an issue,” said Robert.

Cobbold said one of the reasons he was contemplating on taking  Tiong was due to the latter’s openly expressed support for a bill to amend the Syariah Courts Act (Criminal Jurisdiction Act 1965)(Act 355)in Parliament.

Tiong has been the Bintulu MP since 1999.  In the last general election, he was challenged by  John Brian Anthony of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), who garnered 19,025 votes against Tiong’s 26,458 votes.

Cobbold said for now, PBDS Baru only planned to take on SPDP in the coming general election after Tiong and Saratok Member of Parliament, Tan Sri William Mawan, who won the seat on an SPDP ticket before leaving the party, had openly supported the bill.
