KUCHING: The first quarter of 2017 saw all the 11 work package contracts (WPCs) registered zero loss time injury (LTI) after clocking a total of 1,719,510 man hours for the period.

Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak’s (PBHS) Facebook stated that the cumulative man hours without LTI up to 25 March 2017 were 3,147,583 man hours.

This definitely augurs well for the construction of Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak as Lebuh Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU) is targeting to achieve 7,000,000 man hours without LTI till the end of 2017.

Last year, all the 11 WPCs clocked a total of 1,408,389 man hours with zero LTI.

A man hour, or less commonly known as person-hour, is the amount of work performed by the average worker in one hour. It is used in written ‘estimates’ to describe the total amount of uninterrupted labour required to perform the task.

Loss time injury (LTI) is an injury sustained by an employee that will ultimately lead to the loss of productive work time in the form of worker delays or absenteeism.

An injury is considered a lost time injury only when the worker is unable to perform the regular duties of the job, takes time off for recovery, or is assigned modified work duties for the recovery period.

Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak’s WPCs have so far organised 62 safety and health programmes, including fire training, CIDB training, emergency response training, traffic controller training, and safety awareness programmes.

A total of 698 safety walkabouts, 461 inductions and 3,263 toolbox briefings were conducted at the sites since the project started in late 2015.

Meanwhile, LBU’s Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Department will be embarking on various health, safety and environment campaigns this year to create awareness on the importance of these practices at workplace.

The campaign, which will involve all the 11 WPCs, is in tandem with the target to achieve 7,000,000 man hours without LTI as well as the LBU’s effort to conserve the environment.
