PDK Kapit lauded for efforts

KAPIT: Bukit Goram Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat gave the Board of Management and staff of Kapit Community Based Children Rehabilitation Centre (PDK Kapit) a pat on the back for taking care of the children with special needs.

“I urged parents having children with special needs to send them to this centre while they are busy at work. Here, their children will learn how to look after themselves and do simple tasks,” Jamit said during his visit to the PDK Kapit, recently.

He was accompanied during the visit by Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong, heads of departments and local community leaders.

Jamit and his delegation were warmly welcomed by the chairlady of PDK Kapit Board of Management, Moonly Tiang and supervisor, Ting Bee Eng.

During the visit, Moonly briefed Jamit and members of his delegation on the various facilities available at the centre and also the roles and functions of the centre which is to provide day care to the children with special needs.

There are 42 children with special needs (OKU) registered with the centre and it is open from Monday to Thursday while Friday is home visiting.

Moonly added that the centre is financed by the State Welfare Department for the rental, insurance and allowances for the staffers.  She further added that the centre has also received a very encouraging support from the local Chinese associations anda clubs which donated money for the centre’s various activities.

Among the facilities available at the centre are a dining room, kitchen, children play ground, conference room, sewing machine and the latest addition the RM80,000 reflexology room.

Moonly also disclosed that the objective of the centre was to provide basic living skills so that the children know how to look after themselves at home while their parents are busy.

Jamit’s visit was held to coincide with the centre’s gotong royong (community service) held during the week end.

Earlier Maybank Kapit staffers helped at the centre as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) by cleaning the compound and also donated an electric sewing machine worth RM1,800.
