Party also wants to stake a claim on its eight traditional seats in next polls

KUCHING: The state elections may be still two-and-a half years away, but the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) is lobbying to be given two additional seats.

At the same time the party, one of the four components of Parti Gabungan Sarawak (GPS),  will strive to regain two of its seats – Krian and Pakan – which it lost to the opposition in the 2016 polls. It contested in five of its eight traditional seats.

Three of its other traditional seats – Bekenu, Batu Danau and Ba’ Kelalan – were given to Barisan Nasional (BN) direct candidates.

Now the party is staking a claim on all its eight seats.

The above were among the issues discussed at the party’s supreme council meeting chaired by its president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing at its Bintulu Service Centre last Sunday.

Currently the party is holding three seats – Tasik Biru, Meluan and Marudi.

Tiong declined to name the two new seats the party wanted, but added that a discussion on the matter would be further pursued at the party’s supreme council meeting after the TGA next year.

PDP is scheduled to hold its triennial general assembly (TGA) on Jan 12 next year. Tiong said unlike in the previous TGA there would be no elections for all the key positions in both the Youth and Women wings.

“There will be no election for the Youth and Women Wings supreme council members because of technical issues in the party’s constitution involving its members’ age limit.

“Before this, the age limit for both Youth and Women wings were set at 35. Now, following requests by both wings’ members, the membership age limit has been increased to 45,” he said.
