KUCHING: Some 164 Penan homes from Long Leng Longhouse in Layun, Baram are now equipped with solar power panels that will enable them to enjoy 24-hour electricity supply.

Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity, Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi who visited the longhouse yesterday said the solar panels would benefit the residents.

“Long Leng has the potential to become a tourist hotspot. With the availability of 24-hour electrical supply, the people can be more productive in producing handicraft, developing homestay and so on.

“Besides, the Penan children can now study under better environment and families can save up to RM600 a month on diesel fuel for power generators,” said Rahman in his speech.

The programme was being implemented under the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (SARES). At the same function, Rahman also handed over RM5,000 to assist the village headman for the construction of their new village church.

Regarding the solar panels, he reminded the villagers to look after them well so that they could last for a longer period of time. “These panels are much better than generators. They are more environmental friendly and they do not emit noise.

“I am proud the Penans in Long Leng here are working hard to raise their standard of living while at the same time maintaining harmony within the community,” said Rahman. Also present Baram MP Anyi Ngau and di rector f rom the Ministry of Utility, Syed Mohd Fauzi Sahab.
