BELAWAI: The spirit of goodwill was proven with the attendance of over 500 residents in the programme ‘Pesta Pulam’ organised by the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Kampung Jerijeh Baru and Women’s Bureau here on Wednesday.

Penghulu Rosli Mat said, the participants included residents from Kampung Rajang and Belawai. According to him, the programme was not only aimed at cultivating the spirit of solidarity but as effort to promote the spirit of cooperation among the people.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Workforce Development and Training Datu Len Talif Salleh and his wife, Datin Asiya Awai.

In his speech Len said, various side events were also held to enliven the programme.

“The result of the cooperation is that we manage to attract many people. This proves that the spirit of solidarity of the local residents is still strong. For the organiser, it is quite an achievement, “he said.

At the same time, Kampung Jerijeh which is estimated to be about 30 kilometres from Tanjung Manis new township has won the Award of Area Neighbourhood Watch (KRT) for both the district and state levels. It also won the Anugerah Desa Sejahtera 1 Malaysia Sarawak State Level.

Rosli said Kampung Jerijeh is a new resettlement after the original residents moved there en mass.

“The migration was due to coastal erosion in the early 1970s and this has created a more modern village.

“Today, Kampung Jerijih has more than 1,000 residents and as a result of the government’s commitment, this area is accessible by modern roads as well as having primary and secondary schools.

“We also have a football and futsal fields for recreation as well as a community hall that has been upgraded by the government,” he added.
