KUCHING: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) is expected to produce oil from the D28 offshore oil field, which is about 85 km north-west of Bintulu next month.

The wellhead platform, the final component of the D28 phase one oil drilling project, is ready for installation at the oil field in a few days’ time.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar James Jemut Masing launched the sail away of the D28 topside, which was constructed by OceanMight Sdn Bhd (OMSB), a subsidiary of KKB Engineering Berhad (KKBEB), at the company load-out jetty, in Jalan Bako on Wednesday. OceanMight had earlier completed the D28 jacket which was installed at the oil field in August 2018.

OMSM completed the project in nine-month from the detailed design engineering (DDE) to the Ready for Start-up (RSFU) stage to enable PETRONAS to achieve the first oil from D28 project next month.

At the event, OceanMight also celebrated a major safety milestone after recording 280,000 man hours work without Lost Time Injury (LTI).

Apart from that, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd awarded the D28 contract for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) to OceanMight in March this year.
The D28 Phase 1 is a greenfield project located in the Balingian oil and gas fields and has a water depth of some 35m. D28 has 5.44 million stock tank barrels (mmstb) of recoverable oil reserves.

OceanMight secured a second project – EPCC of wellhead platform for D18 Phase 2 project from PETRONAS Carigali in August which aimed to develop 12.5 mmstb of oil reserves, also located in the Balingian oil fields.

The successful delivery of this EPCC D28 project is a strategic achievement as it marked OMSB’s bold entry into the challenging Oil and Gas industry as one of the few Major Offshore Module and Structure Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning players since OMSB first obtained the Major Fabrication License from PETRONAS in 2013.

The achievement also further strengthened KKBEB’s business diversification journey and added another milestone to its strong 56-year history of business accomplishment in Sarawak.

For its current operation, OMSB employed around 500 Malaysians who are mostly experienced local engineers and skilled workers.

Since 2013, OMSB has participated in numerous tenders through competitive bidding. OMSB was awarded four contracts from year 2014-2017 worth approximately RM250 million. All these projects were successfully executed and delivered safely and on time.

In 2018, OMSB competitively tendered for many projects and was successfully awarded new contracts worth approximately RM300 Million. The new contracts will be completed in stages by the second half of 2019, of which one being the D28 Phase 1 now completed.

OMSB will continue to bid for tenders competitively from 2019 and onwards whilst determining further capital expenditure provision to meet future project requirements.
