MIRI: A police officer suspected of shooting a woman in Kampung Kakai in Serian on Sunday has  been remanded  for further  investigations. Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor told a press conference here yesterday that early investigations revealed that the motive was personal.  Based on records, the suspect was a divorcee, he said

Mazlan added that a pistol was used by the suspect in the shooting. The suspect, he said,  attended a meeting in Kuching prior to the incident.

“He was allowed to carry the gun as he came all the way from Belaga to Kuching for the meeting. He was supposed to go back to Belaga as soon as the meeting finished yesterday,” added Mazlan. He said the suspect was arrested at around 9.35pm on Sunday in the vicinity of a supermarket in Matang.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Meanwhile, it is learnt that a police report on the shooting incident was lodged by the victim’s neighbour in Serian at 3.32pm on Sunday.

The neighbour, Laurence Michael, an auxiliary policeman, said he was sleeping at his aunt’s house when he heard a gunshot at around 3.15pm. In his report, Laurence said the victim’s mother, known only as Medelin, ran over to his house and alerted him that her daughter had been shot by her “son-in-law”, believed to be a police inspector.

Laurence then went over to the house and found the victim lying motionless on the floor.

The body was later sent to Serian Hospital for a post mortem.

Serian District Police chief, DSP Aswandy Anis confirmed the incident and arrest of the suspect in front of a supermarket at Jalan Matang here at 9.35pm. Aswandy said the suspect’s weapon and bullets had been confiscated and he did not resist arrest.
