KUCHING: Students of Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak (POLIKU) successfully made it to the Malaysia Book of Records by organising an Alu-Alu dance performance with the most number of participants.

The 1,289 participants comprised not only students, but also staff members who organised and performed the Melanau dance at the Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak football field at Jalan Matang yesterday.

POLIKU Director, Kamaludin Daud, in his speech during the launching ceremony said the dance performance, held in conjunction with POLIKU Borneo Rainforest Carnival 2018, had gathered all clubs, association and students committee members so that they could work together in organising events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of POLIKU.

“Everyone showed the spirit of cooperation and unity from the first day of practice up till the big performance,” he said.

When met by reporters after the event, Malaysia Book of Records Research Analyst, Mohd Hafizi Hamdan said that this was the first time the Alu-Alu dance had made it into the Malaysia Book of Records.

The Alu-Alu dance was chosen to represent a well-known Sarawakian cultural heritage (Melanau) and was believed to be able to unite all students of diverse backgrounds and nations in Kuching Polytechnic with the guidance and training provided by the Department of Culture and Arts National (JKKN) Sarawak, an active collaborative partner of Kuching Polytechnic since 2016.
