MUKAH: The prices of essential goods in this district have not been increased since the implementation of SST.

Through a random survey carried out by New Sarawak Tribune at several retail outlets here yesterday, the prices of essential items were still as usual, especially at supermarkets and cold storages in town.

For instance, the price of eggs which used to be an issue in the Peninsula was between RM9 and RM11 per tray.

According to an anonymous shopkeeper, there were three common grades of eggs, namely A, B and C.

“The prices are based on the grades. Type A is more expensive followed by B and C. There are other grades as well such as AA and D, but most retailers sell grades A to C only,” said the shopkeeper.

Other essentials include flour which is sold at RM2.50 per packet, and sugar at RM2.85 per packet, with the price of chicken believed to be sold as usual.

Most of the customers pointed out that there was no panic purchase being done despite the upcoming festive season, unless the retailers offer discounts.

“So far, the discount only applied to Christmas decorations and clothings while discounts on other items are only applicable for members of the supermarkets. We shop according to our daily needs as it is not necessary to stock up the items at the moment,” said a housewife who wished to be known as Pola.

Meanwhile, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry Mukah Branch head Moss Baok pointed out that there would be enough stock for essential items for the upcoming Christmas season.

“We are told that there are enough essential items for the upcoming Christmas season. The operation of price check and other related matters are indeed part of our routine,” he said when contacted yesterday.

On the egg issue, he said that it was sold at a higher price in Miri.
