KUCHING:  Sarawak is banking on attracting quality tourists to its shores with international-level sports and conferences.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said these events had proven to draw not just bigger crowds but quality ones, too.

“For next year alone, Sarawak has been successful in its bid to host at least two international sports events , namely the 2019 World Para-Swimming Championship (WPSC) and the 21st Asia Masters Athletics Championship (Amac),” he told the New Sarawak Tribune.

At least 80 countries would be participating in the para-swimming championship, scheduled to be held from July 29-Aug 4, he said, adding it was expected to easily bring in at least 2,000 people, including  supporters and families.

On Amac,  he said  the event, which would be held from Dec 2-6, was expected to bring in bigger crowds  of between 3,000 and 3,500 people.

He said so far more than 40 countries, with the biggest contingent from India, had confirmed participation.
