KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said there is no need to declare a state of emergency due to the recent rabies phenomenon.

“It is confined more in the Serian district only. The only time that the state could be declared in an emergency is if it has spread across the state.

“The state government is currently providing assitance in whatever ways we can, especially in the vaccination of the animals amounting to RM100,000.

Johari said this in an interview after the handing over of letters of participation to perform Hajj at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

He then said that the he will leave decisions on handling the whole situation especially on animal management to the task committee led by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

“The committee consists of various departments such as the health department, veterinary department and also the local council. I am sure they will know what to do,” said Johari.

Meanwhile, Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said that the family of the two children who succumbed to rabies would be given an immediate cash assistance.

“They should have received it yesterday but our team missed team as they were not at home to pay their last respect to both children.

“We will meet with them to hand over the assistance. The ministry will also run a assessment for the family to receive Child Assistance for a total of RM350 per month for three children.

“We will confirm it once we have the chance to meet them in person,” said Fatimah.

She also disclosed that the family may or may not be entitled for the Wild Animal Attack scheme under the federal ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

“However we are not sure whether they are entitled as it was their pet dog which infected them with rabies. We would have to look up into the list whether this case can be included,” said Fatimah.
