KUCHING: With Hari Raya Aidilfitri just a week away, Muslims are busy shopping for their Raya clothes at India Street here. In addition, with no more Goods and Services Tax (GST), the prices will be slightly cheaper.

India Street yesterday was packed with shoppers looking for Baju Kurung, Baju Kurta, songkok and shoes. At Merjiah Trading, a retail shop at India Street here, Amirul Hak Abdul Karim, 29, who works at his father’s shop, said last month’s business was slow.

However, it picked up a few days ago. “With Raya getting closer, we are expecting to see a bigger crowd starting this week,” he said. At Merjiah Trading, there are many types of ready-made Baju Kurung ranging from traditional to modern designs. The prices depend on the fabrics and designs. “Ladies will normally go for the satin-type fabrics now because they are much cooler to wear compared to silk which absorbs more heat,” explained Amirul.

“Our hot selling items are definitely the songkok, which come in different sizes and materials,” he said. He said the thicker the material, the more expensive the songkok would be. A songkok with thicker material costs RM50 while a normal songkok costs RM30.

“Nowadays, people normally go for the foldable type of songkok priced at RM20 each which are easier to carry.,’ said Amirul.
