KUCHING: Those who have not registered for the Sarawak Endowment Fund (EFS) are advised to do so now.

Welfare, Community Well-Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said EFS would benefit contributors’ children who will need money for their education when they are of school age.

According to her, as of March 12, a total of 1,009 out of 6,967 children have registered for the Sarawak Endowment Fund.

She said the money will not be withdrawal until the child reaches the mature age of 18 years old, so it is the responsibility of parents to top this up regularly as is often does with savings.

“There are parents who are late in filling up the registration form, I hope that after the birth of their child whether they are Sarawak citizens or not, the parents should register their child as soon as possible for EFS as it is an obligation,” she said at Baitulmakmur Building yesterday.

The aim of EFS is when a child reaches 18 years old and wishes to further his studies he can use the savings to pay the registration fee or the tuition fees.

“In case the child does not want to further his studies and wishes to work after high school, the savings can also used for career purposes,” she said.

She said she will cooperate with the National Registration Department (JPN) to give the information on the total birth of Sarawakians.

“For us in the ministry, this vital information so that we can do an intervention and perhaps carry out an awareness programme,” she added.
