KUCHING: Following the heavy rainfall in the past weeks, Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd (SHSB) had commenced the controlled release of water from the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) reservoir yesterday.

In a press release issued by Sarawak Energy (SEB) yesterday, residents downstream were assured that the regulated release of water is a standard practice undertaken periodically during heavy rainfall. The controlled spilling is expected to last for an estimated duration of three weeks.

Bakun HEP will cease spilling once the water level at the reservoir normalises. Since the completion of the dam seven years ago, Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd (SHSB) (subsidiary of SEB and HEP operator) has been regulating the water level upstream through this procedure, ensuring that the discharged volume have minimal impact on downstream water flow.

It is to be noted that the incidence of flooding downstream had been reduced and the impact mitigated as the dam holds back a large volume of rainwater all year round although downstream rainfall into catchments and tributaries of the Rejang can still result in floods.
