Retired soldier dies of accidental gunshot

KUCHING: A retired soldier died in a freak accident at about 11.20pm on Monday after returning from a hunting trip.

Hereng Pili, 44, who was found with a shot wound in his upper body, was still in a sitting position on his fallen motorcycle at Kampung Plaie, Samarahan.

An eyewitness, identified only as Wison, saw a man lying next to his motorcycle and called for help. Earlier he saw flashing light at a gravel road, 30 metres from the main road and heard a loud bang.

Upon checking, he found the lifeless body of a man lying on the road. Another person who was with Wilson at the scene was familiar with Hereng. A shotgun was found lying next to the deceased.

Samarahan police chief, DSP Lee Chong Chern who confirmed the case said the deceased’s son told police that at 9pm his father told him he was going out hunting. He added later, the villagers told him his father had died.

Initial police investigation found the gun was loaded and the firing pin was accidentally triggered.

The shot blasted through the lower side of the deceased’s left ear. Police said the wound showed indication it was fired at point blank.

There was no foul play and police classified the case as sudden death report.
