KOTA BHARU: Kelantan Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) has called on the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led government to review the plan by the previous government to turn certain Teacher Education Institutes (IPG), particularly the Kota Bharu IPG, into polytechnics and vocational colleges.
Its chairman, Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said this was because the Kota Bharu IPG has a long-standing history of producing qualified teachers from all over the country for a long time.
“It is a (teaching) institution which was established before independence back in 1944 and one of the oldest teaching colleges in the country.
In fact, it has received recognitions from the Malayan Teachers’ Training College in Kirkby, England. “We will be sad if the (current) government were to implement what was decided by the previous government.
I hope Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik will review the decision so that the Kota Bharu IPG will be here to stay,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Prior to this, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced that several IPG campuses would be turned into polytechnics and vocational colleges in line with the current needs of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Meanwhile, asked on the list of five candidates submitted by the Kelantan Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) to be appointed as senators, Kamaruddin said each component party in PH had its own approach.
“There is no need for us to submit the names as Dr Mahathir already has the list. We are here to serve, not to demand anything,” he added.
