KUCHING: Ride for the Wild (R4TW) 2017 will be held on 20 May at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus here.
While the main event is targeted at Kuching’s cycling community, the side events aim to attract members of the public.
One of the main attractions will be the Zumbathon organised by Swinburne Dance Club and led by instructors from Soul Dance.
Members of the public who wish to participate in the Zumbathon may do so with a contribution amount they feel appropriate for the conservation of orang-utans, sharks and rays.
Registration is open and those interested can register online or on the day itself.
The 90-minute workout marathon is expected to commence at 9.00 am.
Participants are not required to take part for the full 90-minutes and may drop in or out at any time.
Additionally, holding true to the green theme of the event, the Swinburne Green Club will be organizing a recycling drive.
Members of the public are encouraged to drop off paper, plastic, glass and aluminum cans at the Swinburne Multi-Purpose Hall any time from 6.00 am till 10.30 am.
A small plant to take home or to add to the living Swinburne Green Wall will be given to those who drop off a minimum of 2 kg of recyclable items.
Apart from these two great activities, visitors of the event can enjoy wildlife henna painting and face painting from 6.30 am to 11.00 am.
A photobooth will also be open at the same time. Riders, volunteers and their family members can take photos with the props provided and leave their messages of support for conservation by signing the photobooth.
Even the youngest of guests will be entertained at the kid’s corner, which will include games, word search, and some coloring activities from 9.00 am to 11.00 am.
R4TW 2017 is a cycling event that aims to provide interested stakeholders with a platform to send their messages of support for wildlife conservation.
It is organised by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia Programme, Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC).
Apart from the 56 km and 23 km route, the ride this year will include the Virtual Ride category to accommodate those who are unable to join the ride in Kuching, but still wish to support conservation.
They can ride on exercise bikes or actual bicycles and need only email their track log to prove they have completed a certain distance.
The track log will be posted on the WCS Malaysia Facebook page (some have already been posted) and participants will receive an e-certificate of participation.
While participation in the Virtual Ride is free-of-charge, it is hoped that virtual riders will contribute to the conservation cause.

The ride and the conservation of orang-utans and sharks are supported by the Sarawak Society for the Deaf, who will be participating in the 23 km route.

Registered participants can collect their ride packs at WCS Malaysia’s Kuching Office on Friday, 19 May 2017 from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm.
