KUCHING: A RM1.2 million new hawker centre would be built to accommodate hawkers, currently plying their trade along a roadside near Kampung Baru at the Batang Samarahan Bridge in Samarahan.

The new facility is scheduled for completion sometime in June this year.

Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang yesterday visited the project site to get an update on the progress of the project.

She said the new hawker centre would be able to accommodate 60 stalls.

“The centre would also be equipped with various facilities for the benefit of both customer and traders. They include proper toilet and 44 parking bays,” she added.

According to Rubiah, the hawker centre project is built by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council under the Rural Transformation Project Initiative.

The roadside stalls were allocated for the safety of road users along Samarahan to Asajaya highway.

Initially, the hawker stall community were concerned that their main source of income would be affected due to the enforcement of district by-law, effective early January.

The new hawker centre would be a proper initiative to ease the matters mentioned above.
