KUCHING: A privatisation project which costs about RM350 million for Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) would help to provide better quality services to the public.

According to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, they had started the privatisation project since November 2017, and some of the infrastructures built would be utilised by the Ministry of Health.

“We have brought a few development projects to SGH, the biggest one is the privatisation project that costs about RM350 million to build a complex for daycare centre, operating theatre, pathology lab, and also about 1800 lots of parking space, which will be built by a private company,” said Subramaniam during a press conference held after his work visit to the Dog Bite Clinic and Infectious Diseases Ward at SGH, yesterday.

He added that the project would take about two to three years to complete, which is expected by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

Meanwhile, commenting on Petra Jaya Hospital, Subramaniam said that the hospital is a sick project and has to be ‘treated’.

He said this should not happen, but sometimes this matter relies on the contractors to complete the project within the stipulated time.

“The contractors are facing various issues during the project implementation, which have caused such delay.

“The Public Works Department (JKR) has given an extension time to the contractor to complete the project until the end of 2018.

“Hope that with the extended period, the contractor would be more responsible in completing the project because it affects the SGH and also the general public,” he said.

Also present were Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sarawak Director of Health Dr Jamilah Hashim.
