BAKO: The RM41.2 million Sungai Bako Bridge project will open to the public on this Oct 12.

Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the 280-metre bridge began in March 2016 and is completed within two years.

But he said, for some reason unexpectedly, the completion date has been extended and is to be fully completed on this October 12, 2018.

“The cost of this bridge is RM41.2 million and this bridge will provide facilities for the people in the rural areas especially the people in Bako area.

“This project is one of the rural roads in coastal areas financed entirely by the Sarawak State Government and it is located in the Demak Laut area,” he told reporters at Kampung Bako here yesterday.

Julaihi said that the bridge would provide opportunities and facilities for locals not only in terms of communication but it would also encourage the opening of idle land.

According to him, apart from the Sungai Bako Bridge, other proposed bridges under construction are fully supported by the Sarawak Government namely Batang Saribas, Krian, Muara Lasa, Kuala Paloh and Rajang Bridge.

Meanwhile, Demak Laut State Assemblyman (ADUN), Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni said the Sungai Bako Bridge project is a long-awaited development project by the people in the Bako area.

“With this bridge, it will develop the village area and the economy of the locals as it facilitates the opening of new areas, especially for affordable housing projects that will open in the future in new areas,” he said.

The bridge across the Sungai Bako connects three villages, Kampung Bako Hulu, Kampung Bako Tengah and Kampung Bako Hilir with a population of almost 5,000 people, Hazland added.
