KUCHING: The problem of frequent flash floods in Matang area is expected to be resolved with the construction of a RM70 million rainwater retention pond near Taman Sejoli, said Minister of Works and Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof .

Sarawak’s Depar tment of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) as well as the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will be doing a thorough analysis of the empty land near Taman Sejoli before construction begins.

“The lowland of Taman Sejoli makes the area a suitable place to build a rainwater retention pond which will then pump water to the Sarawak River,” he said when gracing an event organi s ed by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) at the Taman Sejoli Multipurpose Hall in Matang here yesterday.

According to Fadillah, these areas experience frequent flash f loods because r iver water does not flow to the ocean fast enough during the high tide even though the water level is under control.

“I understand that the resident s of Taman Sejoli had previously planned to build a recreational park in that particular area. They can form an organisation to further discuss matters with DBKU.

The recreational park can be incorporated into the design of the retention pond. “DID and DBKU will need to further determine the costs of building the retention pond and the recreational park so that allocations by the federal government and state government can be made,” he added.
