KUCHING: 18 families in the Santubong Parliamentary Constituency were chosen to receive their housing aid for the construction of new homes under the “Rumah Ihsan Wan Junaidi” (PPIWJ) project yesterday.

According to Santubong Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, contributions to help the needy comes from the corporate sector as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

He said the project, which began in 2015, had so far seen 18 families receiving allocations of about RM70,000 each, for the purpose of building a new furnished home.

Junaidi said that although the government provided many housing assistance schemes such as the Housing for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT), People Friendly Homes (RMR) and so on, sometimes the complicated application procedures which were time-consuming made it difficult for some residents to apply for it, especially for those affected by disasters such as fires.

“As our Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants are also limited, we have to talk with corporate sectors to address this matter.

Some of them have agreed to fund this project. “The selection of all 36 recipients (including 18 chosen today) was done by my service centre’s committee.

Any residents in the Santubong Parliamentary constituency may apply for this assistance, provided the applicant or any family member owns a piece of land,” said Junaidi, who is also the Natural Resources and Environment Minister when inaugurating the project at Kampung Panglima Seman Ulu.

Junaidi also said the PRIWJ project also used the services of builders from local villages to generate income for locals and prevent third parties from raking the profits.

He assured that he would continue to serve the people in his area as well as possible. The project started in 2015 with a total fund of RM320,000 to build six houses at a cost of RM60,000 each. In 2016, PRIWJ built 12 houses at the cost of RM70,000 each and in 2018, another 18 houses will be built at the same costs. Also present were Junaidi’s wife, Datin Fiona Wan Junaidi and Pemanca Rashidi Junai.
