KUCHING: There were 3,617 road accidents in the state from 1 January to 23 March this year, compared to 4,130 cases for the same period last year. The fatal accidents for the same period this year also decreased by 20.5 per cent while major injuries from accidents decreased by 17.2 per cent. Damaged vehicles reported have also decreased by 12.3 per cent.

“These positive trends show that more drivers in Sarawak now obey the law and are more tolerant with one other.

“I believe these figures can go down even further with more road operations being conducted and especially if we continue to work together with everyone including the people and the media in

Dato’ Abdul Aziz Yusof said in an interview during the 210th Police Day celebration held at Padang Kawad of the State Police Contingent Headquarters here yesterday. Aziz added that the state Crime Index had declined by 3 per cent, violent crime by 2 per cent and property crime by 3 per cent.

“We are mostly concerned about crime that involve the safety of the people such as burglaries and theft of property. We want to make the people feel safe and hence, such cases also need coordination between members of the public and the police. “More operations will be conducted to tackle the illegal gambling cases which are on the rise at the moment.

This is our focus and we hope that they can be controlled as soon as possible,” he added. Earlier on, Aziz also handed over Integrity Award certificates to four police officers.
