MIRI: The statement by the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Dr Abang Johari TunOpeng that there will an end to the lobbying for projects and that all contracts will be awarded via open tenders is definitely a positive step towards more integrity and transparency in the Sarawak government, says vice-president of Sarawak Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Karambir Singh.

“The chief minister’s announcement that Malaysian Anti – Corruption Commission trained Certified Integrity Officers (CeIOs) will be placed in all Sarawak ministries will also further enhance the image of the Sarawak government,” he said. Karambir believed that these measures will minimise leakages and the people of Sarawak will gain in terms of better delivery of services and projects thereby improving standards of living. He added, the Sarawak government should also extend the placement of CeIOs in all local authorities to similarly enhance integrity and transparency.

“The current system of awarding contacts to bumiputera entrepreneurs for certain categories is not an issue as long as the open tender system is applied as well,” he said. The fast implementation of the above initiative will bolster the confidence of Sarawakians in our government, he said. A freelance contractor, surnamed Kho, aged 51, lauded the chief minister’s statement.
